Blog Post #3

When being taught about Wikipedia it was always deemed as a forbidden source to use. My teachers reiterated that anyone can add information onto Wikipedia, so the information listed was not credible. During my senior year we wrote a research paper and in all caps my teacher wrote, “WIKIPEDIA DOES NOT COUNT AS A SOURCE. IT IS NOT CREDIBLE.”  After being told that I made sure I never used it as a source from that point on because I did not want my information to be questioned. It was not up until this semester that I started using Wikipedia again due to us being assigned to edit an article on Wikipedia. When I told my roommates about my Wikipedia project the first thing they said to me was, “Aren’t you not allowed to use Wikipedia anymore?” Students have strong attitudes towards Wikipedia due to instructors convincing them it is not a good source to gather research. My attitude towards Wikipedia has shifted with my use of it during my project. I now understand that anyone can add to it, but that does not mean it is a bad thing. There is credible information on Wikipedia you just have to be cautious when using it.
